There was a teacher [from what we can tell] who once who tried to talk about the present moment with his students. He had a difficult time explaining things to them because of their beliefs. His obstacle was a belief system and traditions already in place in his country, along with strict religious laws among the people. He had a hard time getting across to these folks. His task was to explain things in terms they could understand....until they were ready to hear more. Over the many ages, his original teachings were in my opinion(along with many others)... lost in translation, but if you have experience in Eastern thought, you'll still see specks of the original teachings in tact throughout all the translated texts. From that Eastern context, you can fill in the blanks. Several tales were taken from the Egyptian Book of the Dead and attributed to this teacher. The "game of telephone"(gossip) is a good example of how things are changed.....during translation and when they're being passed down. Telling tales....was a form of entertainment throughout the ages....no radio, tv,etc.
The teacher told his students this:
".....and you do not know how to examine the present moment."
I only posted this small portion of the quote because if you google that statement, you'll find it was not the "Buddha" who said it.
cheers
