This morning:
It was a good day for birdwatching.......(snowing & they were hanging out at the feeders)
There were sparrows(different kinds), goldfinches, cardinals, titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, dark eyed juncos, doves, towhees, woodpeckers, and bluejays all eating together in my back yard(I think I named them all). I threw some mixed seed on the ground away from where the feeders are. So, they were all over the ground and feeders. Of course, when the bluejays would swoop down, a lot of times they'd scare off the other birds. Then when they'd realize, "oh it was just the jays..." they'd come back and feed some more. Across the yard, not too far off...was a pile of peanuts that the crows were feeding on at the same time all these other birds were around. I set out some Spam we had in the fridge by the peanuts. I thought maybe the crows would dive into that stuff but they seemed to avoid it. I had it on a paper plate. They ate the peanuts around it though. It's just too interesting to watch these animals.
Didn't see any purple finches out today.
The wrens were out, but they weren't in the feeding frenzy...they aren't social birds like that. I saw them one day eating some crushed peanuts I threw out...but they don't get involved with a feast like the other birds.
Another cool sight, was a crow drinking out of the creek, while two ducks were swimming upstream right by it. You don't see that very often.
Come to think of it, these crows could be ravens.....but I'm not an expert. Maybe I'll look up them up shortly.

A raven is smaller and its bill is curved. that is all I know. after looking a long time at a crow and a long time at a raven, it is easier to tell the difference - like when you first meet twins you cannot tell them apart, then after awhile you are very easily able to tell them apart and had no idea why you had trouble in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you'll get a notice when I reply to your comment, but thank you for reading and giving me the scoop on those birds. I've often wondered, but never bothered doing research, even with google handy.
